An easy way to recognize Wirtland

There are many ways to attract people's attention to Wirtland. Recognition is one of them. It sounds official, but in fact you do not need to be General Secretary of United Nations, or a president of some country, to recognize Wirtland. There is a very simple way to recognize our country. Almost every webmaster and owner of internet resource can do that.

When you register yourself at various internet services, you often need to select your country from a drop-down list. So, I am talking about inclusion of Wirtland into such drop-down country list. This can be done very easily by a small change in the coding. Some websites have done that already for Wirtland. The latest example is Slovenian resource (see picture).

For Wirtland, this is important. And for the websites this is useful, too, because of marketing effect. "Our site recognizes virtual country" - is a slogan which helps to stand out, and may draw new clients. So, a small change in coding is well worth the effort.

Wirtland enters the Farsi Wikipedia

Do you speak Farsi? The Farsi version of Wikipedia now has an article on Wirtland. Farsi, or Iranian, has become the 9th language in which Wikipedia articles on Wirtland are available. Wikipedia's coverage of Wirtland is growing steadily. The first article on Wirtland appeared in Bulgarian Wiki, soon followed by English, Spanish, Russian and other language versions.

Slovenia is the third country of the world which covered Wirtland in television news. In the past, American FOX News broadcasted the interview with Larry Fiorino on Wirtland (see clip here) and Bulgarian National BTV Channel organized a live interview with several witizens (see clip here).

Wirtland Offers Medical Services And Employment For Doctors

Wirtland aims to be useful to citizens. This is the cornerstone of our concept of a state. The country must constantly improve the life of citizens, make it more convenient, and create new opportunities of income generation for them.

This proves to be possible, despite natural limitations which we have as a virtual country. A good example is Wirtland Medical Centre (WIMEC), which has been growing since 2008. WIMEC was conceived to be a hub of online medical consultations, open 24 hours every day of the week, in a choice of languages. It serves two purposes:

For users WIMEC is a unique service, where people can find the needed online medical consultant, who speaks their language. Consultation is done online through Skype call or video call. Users can rate the quality of consultations.

Finally, Wirtland is on the way to get its own platform for social network. From beginning, Witizens of Wirtland Network (W.o.W. Network) was based on Ning platform, later migrated to Grou.ps. The quality and reliability of commercial hosting providers was often insufficient. And they were becoming increasingly greedy. Ning, and later Grou.ps demanded that Wirtland upgrades to more expensive service plans, since our membership was growing every day. But Wirtland's policy is unchanged: citizenship of Wirtland will always remain free, and there will be no obligatory membership fees!

There were many discussions about necessity of creation of an independent platform for WoW Network, which finally are leading to a concrete achievement. The first independent network is now open for membership and testing at http://witi.medianewsonline.com. It's yet in beta testing stage, but its functionality is extending every day. The good thing is that it's completely free from any non-Wirtland branding or advertising.

With time, all the content will migrate from old network to the new one. But this process is not automatic, and migration of 2000 member profiles by hand is a very complicated process. Therefore, we are encouraging every witizen to register himself/herself at the new network. We are also asking to consider voluntary donations to Wirtland (of $10 or above), to help us cover the costs of migration and new network setup. This is completely voluntary, non-obligatory support. The new network is based on customized version of BuddyPress software. The hosting provider is Wirtland's long-time partner Agilityhoster. Comments and suggestions from users will be appreciated. Interview with Oguzhan Karahan, author of Wirtland's Anthem

Wirtland already unites approximately 2000 witizens from all continents and almost every country of the world. It is exciting to learn more about the people, who support our project, and contribute their time, skills and resources. They deserve a bit of glory and recognition, and we hope that interview with such witizens will be interesting both to Wirtland's community and to general audience. Our today's guest is Mr. Oguzhan Karahan. He is professional musician, who proposed an anthem for Wirtland. Here is the link to anthem (comments are welcome!).

Wirtland: Hello Oguzhan. Like many witizens, it appears you have a mixed ethnicity and multinational background. Tell us about yourself.

Oguzhan: I was born in Istanbul, son of Turkish Cypriot mother and Meskhetian father. I lived in Istanbul until half way through high school, after which I moved to Famagusta in Northern Cyprus.

The time spent in Istanbul has allowed for its chemistry to form the most important part of my political and musical views. I started playing the bass-guitar aged 14, and joined various bands during my time in Istanbul. The musical activities led to the formation of my political interest and views due to the atmosphere of the environment I found myself in. Istanbul has given me many things.   

Later on I moved to my mother’s hometown Famagusta in Northern Cyprus, finishing my high school education there. This was also where my most musically active period began. I founded and became part of many bands and played with various artists and orchestras during this time period. I was playing on many stages all over Cyprus including in North Cyprus’ first TV Talk Show with a band I had established.

At the moment the main instruments I play are the bass-guitar and baritone ukulele although I also play numerous other instruments as well. Due to my individual music projects, I took a break on other music projects like bands. Nowadays I am working on planning a project called “Revolution Songs”, which will include revolution songs from different countries and cultures across the world.   Artists which have inspired me are Fikret Kizilok, Zulfu Livaneli, Grup Yorum, Asik Mahsuni Serif and Ruhi Su.   I have started University life in North Cyprus, which is currently continuing in Canterbury, UK. Presently it appears that the future will be taking me to Prague, Czech Republic.

Wirtland: Sounds quite an interesting life story! And what brought you to Wirtland?

Oguzhan: I firstly heard about Wirtland by reading an article in the newspaper. The idea really drew me in, so I started further research. What then really got my attention was the idea that the organization is based on nondiscrimination. The fact that there is one organization which has 1750 members from different countries, cultures, ideologies and views about life being part of and working all for the same idea astonished and impressed me. On top of this, the organization strongly relates to my political ideology. I have now been a Witizen since the beginning of 2010.

Wirtland: And, as our records show, you are an owner of Wirtland plastic ID card. That's always nice to know.

Oguzhan: Wirtland has done so much successful initiative work, systematically and strategically. Like every good organization, Wirtland has seen its flaws and corrected them over time. I realized one important issue troubling Witzens like me was that Wirtland did not have its own anthem. Of course we shouldn't wait for someone not from Wirtland to help us out, and as a musician member of Wirtland I felt a responsibility to solve this.   Before I started to make the anthem, I drew up a plan. Firstly I decided for the lyrics to be in Esparanto as the production of the anthem and the organizations itself should not conflict each other.

Wirtland: Why Esperanto?

Oguzhan: Wirtland is a multicultural organization and Esparanto is the most compatible language and thus the most appropriate to use for this project. The second important point when writing the lyrics for me was to try and adapt Wirtland's symbols to the lyrics. For example; "Naskigis la nova suno, Fenestro de homareco" (meaning "A new sun was born, In the window of humanity”) is symbolized by the Wirtland flag. In another example I used the motto of Wirtland (Courage, not multitude, wins) in the end of the chorus. Furthermore an important point about the anthem is the title. The meaning of this anthem’s title (Ne Estas Revo!) is "It's not a dream". I tried to highlight the idea which we try to achieve, that Wirtland isn’t just a dream. At the composing stage, I tried to find a melody that was remarkable as well as easy to remember for everybody.

Once all the stages were finished and all the paperwork such as copyrights were completed, I published it. When I did all of this, I had two main purposes. Firstly to give something to the purpose that I believe in and to help it progress further up the road. Secondly to show other people that we share same purpose and so if we want to do something, everybody should put their hands under the rock together. That is the only way to make the world listen to us. I believe I have worked on my responsibility for this purpose and I will be happy if I changed something in people’s minds.

Wirtland: I think we share the same belief. Good words, and great job! Oguzhan, many thanks for your interview.

About Wirtland's anthem:
During its first year of existence Wirtland had no anthem. On Wirtland Day, August 14, 2009, Wirtland approved the song written by renown French composer Mr. Michel Legrand "Watch What Happens" as national anthem of Wirtland (MP3 file here). The song was not an original anthem, but was selected due to its appropriate lyrics and multi-culturalism: music by French composer, performed in English by Brazilian group. Oguzhan Karahan's proposal is the first original anthem written for Wirtland. It is now published for discussion (link). If positive public opinion prevails, the anthem will be officially approved.

Wirtland citizenship for Julian Assange

Government of Wirtland decided to grant Wirtland citizenship to Julian Assange. The official letter from the world's first sovereign cybercountry underlines Mr. Assange's "great accomplishments in changing the public perception of internet and its role in the world's balance of power". Official residence permit was issued in the name of Julian Assange.

"Your example has vividly demonstrated how quickly and efficiently the internet can influence real life. While citizenship of a cybercountry may seem merely symbolic today, you know better than anybody else the potential of cyberspace and the role of web social projects in the near future. Wirtland offers our citizenship to show our support to your case, and our appreciation of your achievements," - states the Wirtland's letter to Mr. Assange.

Mr. Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, is currently under house arrest in England pending an extradition hearing. For his work with WikiLeaks, Assange received a number of awards and nominations, including the 2009 Amnesty International Media Award and Readers' Choice for Time magazine's 2010 Person of the Year.

Email newsletter is great, but what's a New Year eve without presents? Wirtland has just opened a brand new gift shop, full of stylish, fully-customizable items with Wirtland symbols. The shop is called "Wirtland Design", and our friend James Bond was heard saying that "It's shocking, positively shocking!"

Wirtland Network in Russian: Виртландия ПО-РУССКИ!

Witizens of Wirtland Social Network (W.o.W.) is expanding. Recently a group of Russian-speaking witizens opened a localized witizens network with user interface and commands convenient for users of Cyrillic alphabet - Russians, Bulgarians, Ukrainians. But it is not limited to Cyrillic users only. In accordance with Wirtland's principles, the new network can be automatically translated to any language - just like the main W.o.W. Non-Russian speakers can also sign up using translated interfaces.
The Russian network is not an official Wirtland network: membership in it does not make you a citizen of Wirtland. But Wirtland welcomes this initiative, and hopes that localized witizens networks will help to popularize Wirtland around the globe.

How to sell a square mile of wasteland for 2.6 billion dollars? A micronation proposes new way to raise money to help developing countries

Wirtland, an internet community which considers itself a micronation, invented a new way to generate funds to help small developing countries.

Many small third world countries have scarce resources, almost non-existent economies, and extremely high levels of unemployment. However, even the smallest of them possess territory - and that's what matters in Wirtland’s plan. According to it, all currently unused, barren or abandoned territory, including mountains, wasteland left over after mining, or even adjacent sea, lagoons, coral reef can become a source of immediate income. How?

Wirtland proposes to sell the plots of such territory. Though the current market price of such plots is close so zero, Wirtland knows how to make them attractive to buyers. Here's the catch: first Wirtland proposes to formally acquire this territory, because this web-based micronation aspires to become a real sovereign country, and therefore needs own legitimate land. This is not as fantastic as it sounds – the international law (Montevideo Convention) leaves the door open for formation of new states. To be eligible for international recognition Wirtland needs territory - even a symbolic piece of land, which is not under jurisdiction of any other country. It can be achieved through a contract with a country, which wants to cash in on its unused land resources and agrees to transfer a piece of its territory to Wirtland.

Such an agreement will be the world’s first case of legal formation of a new country from a virtual community. It will be an unparalleled global sensation, and immediately will bring the agreement in the focus of world attention. This is one of reason why Wirtland hopes there is market for its plots. Another reason is citizenship of the world’s newest state and other benefits which come along with passport of Wirtland, which will no longer be just a virtual micronation, but a fully-fledged sovereign state. Yet another reason of high demand in Wirtland property will be its competitive pricing – many times lower than other options for second citizenship on the market today. Of course, no one will physically move to a Pacific island or other remote property. Wirtland will remain a virtual country, so all its citizens will safely remain in their homes, but with legitimate second passports, certificates of land ownership, and full sets of human rights including free travel, or rights to elect and be elected for various positions within the ever-growing global state.

As Wirtland divides the land into tiny plots and offers them for sale, all the profits will go into the budget of the donor country. This is how the developing nation will financially benefit from the deal: its government will receive income from otherwise worthless land. A simple calculation shows that, if Wirtland sells symbolic 1 square meter of land for a symbolic one thousand dollars, just one hectare (100m x 100m) of territory will bring 10 million dollars to the developing nation. And a single square mile may bring in a hefty 2,6 billion addition to the country’s budget!

Wirtland’s gain from the deal is not financial – by acquisition of a formal territory it becomes eligible for international recognition, for the first time in the world history. This is why the size and quality of territory are not important for Wirtland. In fact, Wirtland may sell plots from more than one developing country, strengthening its statehood by stepping into several regions of the world – in case the sufficient demand for Wirtland’s plots and alternative citizenship.

It is known officially that Wirtland started its contacts with potential partner countries with Nauru, a tiny Pacific nation. How the developing countries will react to Wirtland’s proposal is yet to be seen. There are dozens cash-strapped third-world nations in the world today. Even if just one of them takes the virtual micronation seriously, it will be a major sign of the times, showing that virtual life is firmly setting its rules everywhere, and changing profoundly the life of 21 century.

1. Two years of Wirtland

Wirtland is two years old. Not much for a country. But a lot for a micronation. Starting from zero in 2008, Wirtland became the world’s largest micronation. We are happy to welcome new citizens almost daily. They come from every country of the world. Wirtland’s plastic ID cards are being used for identification by people on all five continents. Our Citizenship Application Form is now available in 12 languages (English, Spanish, Bulgarian, Turkish, Portuguese, Russian, Thai, Korean, Dutch, Italian, Chinese, Japanese), and all translations have been done by our citizens. It’s not a big exaggeration to say that Wirtland is everywhere.

Like any new project, we had our ups and downs. Our gold and silver coins have been a fantastic success, instantly making Wirtland the world’s only micronation to produce such objects. But direct retail sales of coins became too expensive for the mint, because sending precious metals to many countries is restricted. That’s why the coins are now available only from re-sellers. Our mint is ready to produce the coins in bulk. We still need to find the way to distribute them.

Wirtland ID cards are becoming popular. The orders have come from a wide range of countries – from Canada to Turkey. Obviously, the witizens find ways to make them useful for real life purposes, for instance to use along with a credit card, or to prove one’s age. Though we had to increase the card issuance fee in accordance with our printshop’s pricelist, the demand for the cards remains stable. In future, we want to make the cards much more useful. As IDs have names and unique numbers, they can be used as discount cards. We are seeking merchants willing to accept them, offering discount to citizens and attracting new clients.

One of more serious landmarks of Wirtland’s history was development of our plan for real land acquisition. This plan is a barter deal between Wirtland and a recognized country. According to it, Wirtland helps such a country to make financial profit out of its unused territory, in exchange for a transfer of symbolic piece of land to us. Fantastic as it sounds, this plan has nothing impossible about it. Of course, we are realists and did not expect success after one or two attempts. We will continue to carefully identify potential partner countries and work to establish contact with them.

One of our top priorities, if not the highest one, is raising awareness about Wirtland in the world. In accomplishing this aim, the first year of Wirtland was very successful, with dozens of articles and two television shows: on America’s FOX Channel, and on Bulgaria’s main BTV Channel. I have to admit that the second year was less bright. One of the reasons was, probably, the painful exodus from our hosting provider, caused by change in its pricing policy. However, a large part of responsibility remains on Wirtland’s administration, and personally on me. In the future I will take more active part in the popularization of Wirtland. Also, I want to facilitate contact with the citizens and the press, and establish a direct questions-and-answers hotline with my office. At the same time, I strongly believe that citizens of Wirtland also need to play a more active role in spreading the word about our project.

Economic sustainability of Wirtland is another core priority. Many ideas have been proposed, but no considerable business projects have been realized or even developed so far. I believe this is natural. The number of our population is still very low, while for business projects we need highly experienced professionals. But they are too few, and in high demand – even in the big countries. So, we do not dramatize the lack of business activity, but we want to encourage more initiative in the business field. One of promising directions is the “Wirtland Franchise” model, which serves a dual purpose: profit generation and popularization of Wirtland. “Wirtland Franchise” is, essentially, use of word Wirtland as a part of brand name for various new products. This model was first proposed by a South African winemaker, who wanted to sell wine under Wirtland label (“real wine from virtual land”). The same approach may apply to a variety of products and services, and we hope it will prove successful eventually.

2010 was also marked by establishment of Wirtland Institute. Wirtland Institite (WI) and Global Antiwar Party (GAP) are two Wirtland’s pilot projects in the humanitarian field. They are conceived to demonstrate Wirtland’s stand in the theory of statehood (WI) and in the practice of political life (GAP). Of course, they are still in embryonic phase, just like Wirtland itself. But we believe they serve as an important message, that Wirtland is more than just another online game or business venture, and has ambitious goals in politics and policy as well.

2. Witizen Services

After this overview, let briefly touch upon our new initiative - Witizen Services.

Wirtland’s overall concept is simple. We want to build the country around the person. We are not starting with institutions, laws and other mechanisms. We want to address person’s needs, first and foremost. This is why we are now developing Witizen Services.

First, we want to learn what services are most needed by the people.

Second, we will define what services Wirtland can render, taking into account our natural limitations as non-recognized country. We will hire qualified personnel and start rendering the services. The personnel will receive salary. The salary will be formed from the service fees.

What services will that be? Let witizens decide. It will depend on the people’s demands, and Wirtland’s ability to find appropriate professionals. From legal services to consulting, from information and translation services to security, from medical to religious. As witizens come from every professional sphere, our range may be rather broad.

Among the most obvious services that Wirtland should offer to our citizens is protection and legal advice. If you believe that you are in trouble and need legal support, perhaps contacting Wirtland’s lawyer would be a good idea. If you feel you were offended, maybe Wirtland can protect you. There is a chance that a witizen, who is willing and able to help, is nearby. We just need more information to release the full potential of witizenship. That’s why we are starting Witizen Services and looking forward to hearing from you!

On August 14 Wirtland celebrates its second birthday, a national holiday. Chancellor Alexander's Statement reads: "... Wirtland is now two years old. Not much for a country. But a lot for a micronation. Starting from zero in 2008, Wirtland became the world’s largest micronation. We are happy to welcome new citizens almost daily. They come from every country of the world. Statement regarding the intrusion in privacy of Chancellor of Wirtland

During recent weeks the Office of Chancellor of Wirtland has received several letters from person(s) who offered photographic material related to the private life of Chancellor Alexander, the head of Wirtland. This person(s) offered to sell such photographs to Wirtland for considerable sum of money. In case of Wirtland’s refusal to buy the photographs, the paparazzi threatened to send the photos to press. In connection with the repeated requests from above-mentioned person(s), the PR attaché of Government of Wirtland was empowered to issue this statement.

I. Government of Wirtland will not grant any requests from blackmailers.

II. Speculation regarding the possible marriage of Chancellor Alexander is groundless. He protects his private life. He will not disclose the identity of the young lady who accompanied him on the photographs taken in Prague, however he commented that she is a family member. According to Chancellor Alexander, “the paparazzi are completely free to use their photographs as they desire”. He will not provide any further comment.

Paid hosting for Witizens of Wirtland Network: Influence of global economic crisis?

Wirtland.net, or Witizens of Wirtland (WoW) social network, has been hosted at Ning.com since 2008. In exchange for free hosting, Ning has been placing its Google Ads and its logo on WoW. All has been working rather well until now, when even Wirtland started to feel the consequences of global economic crisis. On May 4, 2010, our hosting provider discontinued free service for Wirtland, so we may face a need to introduce some kind of membership fee in the future. Ning's message to WoW network members reads: "We're focusing 100% on paying Ning Networks and will begin phasing out our free service in July".

Wirtland.net has been completely free for witizens so far. Shall we introduce a membership fee for new members now? What about the old members? How much? Any other solutions? Recent "Witizen-to-Witizen" initiatives: a web startup and a job offer

Wirtland's population is not only growing fast. Witizens are becoming an active community, with its own market, start-ups, jobs. Here are two recent projects by witizens and for witizens.

Paul Miller has created "Merkato Virtlando", a beautiful marketplace for Wirtland (link). Everybody is invited to explore this website and share comments and ideas. Hopefully Wirtland will have more projects like that. Seems like a logical strategy for a cybercountry!

Hakan Eren is also proposing a new "Witizen-to-Witizen" project, and is offering a job for webmaster. Here's his announcement:
We are looking for webmaster to create a "party web-page". Looking for a witizen with experience in social networks, who is accessible and responsible. This page will be targeted mainly at Turkish people, so command of Turkish language is important. However, if Turkish is not available, English can do. Salary is negotiable. I'm going to donate 10% of project's profit to Wirtland.

Virtország! Do you speak Hungarian?

Hungarian Wikipedia became the 6th Wikipedia to feature Wirtland. Another beautiful new name for Wirtland was born - Virtország! This is excellent news, of course, and the link is here. However, the article seems a bit too short. Such rudimentary articles are often deleted by the Wiki system, unless users add flesh to them. One of witizens told us about this article. She said she tried to expand it, but could not save the updates, because Hungarian is not her mother tongue, so she probably lost her way in the Wiki commands. Now, some help from Hungarian-speaking people would be appreciated, to save that Virtország Wiki entry.
So, we are asking: Magyar, anybody?

Wirtland creates its own research institute

The Wirtland Institute (WI) was founded in March 2010 as a center for research, analysis, and professional dialogue in the area of new forms of statehood, pertaining to their social, legal, political, economic, and other aspects. WI is conceived to become Wirtland's "think tank" and produce policy recommendations for the first sovereign cybercountry. WI is independent from the government of Wirtland; WI's authors and experts are not limited to citizens of Wirtland. The founders will do their best to keep Institute neutral and free from any political or ideological bias.

The Wirtland Institute welcomes high-quality contributions from international experts. WI opens with publication of article by Thomas Frey, Executive Director at DaVinci Institute, entitled "The Virtual Country: Six Possible Scenarios for the Creation of Viable Virtual Countries". "Emerging forces in globalism has given rise to the notion of creating Virtual Countries, countries without land and without borders. Citizens of Virtual Countries will live in existing land-based countries; abide by their laws; and, at the same time, hold two or more citizenships", - points out the author of the article.

Patri Friedman, founder and executive director of the Seasteading Institute, welcomed possible cooperation with the Wirtland Institute. He said: "I would be delighted if Wirtland would take on research of questions of sovereignty, which are more general than just seasteading and apply to any nation-founding venture, so that we could focus on the specific issues related to nations on the water".

Virtual state to acquire physical territory from Sweden

"Concept such as Wirtland is a new step in development of democracy in 21st century, and Sweden is open to support such initiatives", - Swedish Foreign Ministry spokesman Teo Zetterman said. Wirtland, the first sovereign cybercountry, announced plan to legitimately acquire real land from one (or several) world's countries. Once realized, Wirtland's plan of will be the first case of peaceful formation of a new country “from a scratch”. Sweden became the first country to react positively to Wirtland's proposal. Previously Sweden was among the first to open Embassy in "Second Life" virtual world.

According to Proposal, “The Kingdom of Sweden officially assigns a piece of its territory, of any quality and size, to Wirtland. Sweden will have a major stake in future sales of land from this territory, agreed in contract”. Thereby the virtual state takes hold of official territory, which later would be offered for sale to people willing to become citizens of new country. The quality and size of territory do not matter: Wirtland will remain virtual community, as no buyer will physically move to Sweden. Presence of defined territory is a necessary condition for diplomatic recognition of Wirtland by international community, according to Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States. According to Article 1, to have sovereignty, a state must have a permanent population, a defined territory, and a government. Peaceful acquisition of even a small piece of territory by virtual community is a unique historical precedent, which opens door towards full official recognition of Wirtland, legitimization of Wirtland passports and other documents issued by virtual state.

Olga, a charming lady from Moscow, Russia, became the 1000th citizen of Wirtland, who signed up to the Witizens of Wirtland (WoW) social network at www.wirtland.net. In addition to usual welcome, the 1000th witizen received a present - a free garment from the collection of Wirtland gift shop.

Population of the world's first sovereign cybercountry, however, is larger than the membership of WoW network. In fact, population of Wirtland had reached the 1000th mark much earlier.That's because there are two ways of joining Wirtland. One can either request citizenship application forms by email, or by online registration at www.wirtland.net. Membership in the online community is optional. There are people who received their Residence Permits and plastic ID cards without signing up to the network, so they are not counted by WoW. The total population of Wirtand is currently around 1100 and growing steadily. New members join in almost every day, from nearly every country of the world.

Wirtland has announced plan to legitimately acquire real land from one (or even several) world's countries. If realized, it will be the first case of peaceful formation of a new country “from a scratch”.

According to official press release, Wirtland approached the government of Nauru with a formal proposal to transfer a piece of its territory to Wirtland. Nauru, one of world's smallest island nations situated in the South Pacific, has vast barren terrain left over after several decades of phosphates mining. “Proposal for Monetization of Unused Land by cooperation between Republic of Nauru and Wirtland” is intended to utilize a piece of Nauru’s barren terrain. According to the Proposal, “Republic of Nauru officially assigns a piece of its territory, of any quality and size, to Wirtland. Nauru will have a major stake in future sales of land from this territory, agreed in contract”. In his letter addressed to the President of the Republic of Nauru, Chancellor of Wirtland underlined his hope that “such a plan, if realized, will make a positive effect on the economy of Nauru”.

Thereby the virtual state would take hold of official territory, which later would be offered for sale to people willing to become citizens of new country. The quality and size of territory do not matter: Wirtland will remain virtual community, as no buyer will physically move to Nauru. However, presence of defined territory is a necessary condition for diplomatic recognition of Wirtland by international community, according to Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States. Political Council of Wirtland (PCW) started discussion "Plan for acquisition of physical territory for Wirtland" (Draft):
An internationally recognized country X officially assigns a piece of territory (of any quality and size) to Wirtland. Country X has a stake in future sales of such land, agreed in contract. Wirtland offers the plots of land for sale. Buyers of land will be eligible for citizenship and other benefits. Country X receives up to 75% of net profit from all such sales, which goes to its budget. In result, country X receives profit from unused land, and Wirtland acquires its own official territory and all rights. If prices of Wirtland’s plots show positive trend, other countries may duplicate the scheme, thus adding new territories to Wirtland in various regions.
According to Dr. Noel Cox, Professor of Law at Auckland University of Technology, "this is an interesting proposal". All citizens of Wirtland are welcome to take part in this discussio n, which follows up to an earlier proposal to build a platform floating in international waters. Virtlando means Wirtland - in Esperanto!

Esperanto became the 6th language (after Bulgarian, English, Spanish, Russian, Czech) of Wikipedia's article about Wirtland. The article is titled "Virtlando" - quite a beautiful new name for Wirtland! See article here - if you read in Esperanto.
Esperanto is the most widely spoken artificial international language, invented in 1887. The word esperanto means "one who hopes" in the language itself. Esperanto has had continuous usage by a community estimated at between 100,000 and 2 million speakers for over a century, and approximately one thousand native speakers. Google has a special Esperanto portal. Esperanto is also the language of instruction in one university - the Akademio Internacia de la Sciencoj in San Marino.

After "Gold Crane", Wirtland introduces new coin "Silver Crane"

Two months after successful launch of Wirtland's gold coin, Wirtland now introduces its first silver coin, the "Silver Crane". The new "Silver Crane" weighs 1 troy ounce (31.1 grams) and consists of .999 pure silver, its diameter is 39 mm. The coin's denomination is 2 International Currency Units (ICU). The "Silver Crane" can be purchased online for 38 US dollars from Wirtland's official mint.

The design of new silver coin is similar to 1/10 ounce "Gold Crane", which was considered to be the world's first physical gold coin issued by a virtual country, and called a "work of art" by experts. The silver coin, which is much larger in size, features the same image of migratory crane, symbolizing that virtual country transcends lands and borders. Same image of Japanese crane was used in the Wirtland's postage stamp. The reverse of the coin features the coat of arms of Wirtland, and is also marked ".999 silver". As Wirtland has no geographical location, its address in cyberspace is essential. The country's URL "www.WIRTLAND.com", inscribed on the coin, reflects the unique status of Wirtland as an internet-based state.

"Silver Crane" is offered in 3 versions of finishing: Cameo proof-like (polished silver), Satin, and Matte. The Matte version is a special limited-time offer. National identity card of Wirtland

Wirtland launched its national identity card. Every citizen, who has in the past submitted the Citizenship Application Form and scans of photograph and signature is eligible for receiving the plastic ID card. New applications for residence permit and ID card are also accepted from everybody over 18 y.o., who wants to become a citizen of Wirtland.

The front side of highly secure plastic card features serial number of ID (same as the number of residence permit), personal data, photograph, signature of owner. The card has no expiration date - its validity period is unlimited. The photograph and signature are protected by several levels of microprint and other security features. Wirtland's gold becomes more attractive, while other countries raise prices

Wirtland keeps its gold coin prices unchanged, despite sharp increase of gold price on world market. According to Bloomberg (September 15) "Gold rose, closing above $1,000 an ounce for the third straight session, as commodities climbed on demand for a hedge against inflation. Silver also gained". In result, world's gold coins prices raised considerably. The price of Canadian "Gold Maple Leaf", which is similar to "Wirtland Crane" in weight and purity of gold, rose by 8 dollars (at Nwtmint.com: from $133.95 in July to $141.90 in September).

The price of "Wirtland Crane" is still $135 for collectors and as low as $120 for investors, who purchase 10 coins or more. A purchaser of ten pure .999 gold coins from Wirtland's mint will save 235 dollars as compared to buying similar Canadian coins. Wirtland becomes friendlier to Russian speakers

People from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and other former Soviet republics, who are interested in Wirtland, can now use the Russian version of Citizenship Application Form (see sample here). Russian became the 7th language in which the Wirtland Citizenship Application Form is available, in addition to English, Spanish, Bulgarian, Portuguese, Turkish, Thai. The translation was contributed by a witizen from Russia, who also initiated the "Russian Group" at Witizens of Wirtland Network. All Russian speakers will be welcome at the "Russian Group".

Other important Russian-language resources related to Wirtland include the entry in Russian Wikipedia, an article from Russian national radio, and a recent article in Ukrainian numismatic magazine about the "Wirtland Crane". The Facebook support group for Wirtland's Global Antiwar Party also features a Russian translation. An automatic Russian translation of all "The Times of Wirtland" can be found here.

Wirtland's coins: the first results

Last month Wirtland released the "Crane" - the world's first physical gold coin from virtual land. The birth of Wirtland Crane was widely covered by international media (see list below). Though most of publications are in English, we have spotted also articles in Romanian, German, Russian, Ukrainian, and Czech media.

Orders and Titles of Knight of Wirtland and Dame of Wirtland
To recognize the achievement of outstanding merit or distinguished service to Wirtland in every field of endeavour, the Orders and titles of Knight of Wirtland and Dame of Wirtland were instituted by special decree signed by Chancellor of Wirtland on August 14, 2009. The Order of Knight of Wirtland and Dame of Wirtland has three grades, and can be bestowed upon citizens of Wirtland or foreign citizens. If the Order is bestowed upon a citizen of Wirtland, it is accompanied by the title Knight of Wirtland (K.W.) or Dame of Wirtland (D.W.). The titles are hereditary.

The Government of Wirtland released the official Statement in connection with anniversary of the Russia-Georgia conflict of August 2008:

August 9th, 2009 – In connection with the first anniversary of the Russia-Georgia armed conflict that erupted on August 7-8, 2008, The Government of Wirtland expresses concern about new tensions between Russian Federation and Georgia, building up military presence in the Transcaucasian region, and warlike propaganda in the mass media.

Wirtland invites all Georgians and Russians who are against the confrontation between these two nations to unite their antiwar voices by joining the Global Antiwar Party. As a supranational entity, Wirtland is independent from any other country and has the unique possibility to unite people from the opposing countries into a common organization. Global Antiwar Party (GAP) is open to any adult citizen of any country, and offers equal representation opportunities to people from any national, ethnic, or religious background.

The gold coin of Wirtland has now become available for purchase from our official mint. "Wirtland Crane" is considered to be the world's first gold coin issued by a virtual country.

The face side of the coin features a migratory crane, which symbolizes that virtual country transcends lands and borders. The same image of Japanese crane was also used in the Wirtland's postage stamp. The reverse of the coin features the coat of arms of Wirtland, and is also marked "Gold 999,9". As Wirtland has no geographical location, its address in cyberspace is essential. Wirtland in Wikipedia

The article on Wirtland has now appeared in the English-language Wikipedia, following up to the first Wirtland article published in Bulgarian Wikipedia several months ago. As an internet-based community, Wirtland attaches high importance to being properly represented in the internet encyclopedia.

The Wiki editors are generally known to be rather strict towards the micronations, so soon after publication they inserted a "considered for deletion" notice. The notice said everyone is welcome to share thoughts on the matter of deletion at special page. The editors also inserted a notice accusing "The Times of Wirtland" in causing "meatpuppeting" ("a Wikipedia term meaning the recruitment of (typically, new) editors to join a discussion on behalf of or as proxy for another editor, usually with the aim of swaying consensus in that discussion"). We considered such accusation groundless and regrettable, and expressed hope that Wikipedia's traditional objectiveness and goodwill would prevail over any biased individual attitudes. The final decision was to preserve Wirtland article. However, one of editors changed our article's title (and hyperlink) from Wirtland to Wirtland (micronation), and created a new article (about a historic building in rural USA) under the title "Wirtland", previously used by our entry. Nonetheless, Wirtland is grateful to Wikipedia for inclusion.

Everyone is welcome to improve and edit the Wirtland article. Latest addition: article is banned again. And the ground is... use of copyrighted text from www.wirtland.com! While article itself is "blanked" (unavailable), the article's discussion page hosts some heated disputes. Latest latest addition: the article is approved again, and its original link restored. Now it's again at its original place: Wirtland.

Article on Wirtland is now also available in Spanish and Russian Wikipedia, after Bulgarian and English versions. Proposals about translation to other languages will be most welcome.

Application for Witizenship in Thai: สัญชาติใบสมัคร

Individuals from Thailand can now join Wirtland more easily. The Thai language has become the 6th language in which the Wirtland Citizenship Application Form is available, in addition to English, Spanish, Bulgarian, Portuguese, and Turkish. The translation was contributed by a witizen from Thailand.

2010's update: Currently the Application Form is available in 14 languages: English, Spanish, Bulgarian, Turkish, Portuguese, Russian, Thai, Korean, Dutch, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Polish, Finnish. All the sample Forms can be viewed here.

Artist Tiff McGinnis donates artwork to promote Wirtland

Tiff's colourful bird designs will be used for printing T-shirts and other garments with Wirtland flag, as well as Wirtland's postcards and postage stamps. Tiff McGinnis, also known as Crazy Girl, works in the field of contemporary audio, video and graphic art (her website: www.crazygirl.info) . She is the world's first artist who supports Wirtland with her artistic contribution, which is highly appreciated.

Wirtland's flag under copyright attack?

What is more important in modern world: political law or intellectual property law? Since birth of Wirtland in 2008, Wirtland feels politically safe, as nobody questioned our right for sovereignty and independence. But what about intellectual property? To our great surprise, there is someone who wants to challenge our intellectual property rights. Believe or not, this someone says he holds intellectual property rights over... Wirtland's flag!

This sounds absurd, but that's exactly what happened this week. As any community, Wirtland wanted to offer its own official merchandise. We developed several apparel designs, based on our own artwork. Naturally, our designs included Wirtland's flag. Recently we have opened a shop at Zazzle.com. Wirtland's shop initially offered 9 items, including T-shirts, sweaters, caps, bags, with printed or embroidered Wirtland identity images. All clothing is fully customizable: the buyer can remove/replace inscriptions, add own texts, change compositions, adjust colours, to make his garment unique.

However, we were surprised to receive a letter from Zazzle, saying: "We have been contacted by the intellectual property right holder and at their request we will be removing your product from Zazzle’s Marketplace due to copyright claims". Now, who is that mysterious holder of copyright over the Wirtland's flag?

We have not received answer so far. However, two "banned" apparel items - a sweater and a T-shirt (see pictures) with Wirtland's flag - disappeared from our shop, despite our immediate request to abstain from removing our products until clarification of all questions. We hope Zazzle will solve the problem soon, and believe the company must hold responsibility for ungrounded banning our products. We will keep you informed. In the meantime, wear your Wirtland flag with pride!

Media attention to Wirtland is growing in Bulgaria

Bulgarian radio, magazines and even regional newspapers have paid much attention to Wirtland during the recent weeks. On March 24 the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) interviewed Ruma, one of Wirtland's citizens who earlier this year appeared in live television show on Bulgarian television. Ruma's interview was published on BNR's site (link), reposted by printed media, and translated to several languages (French version here, Russian version here). Simultaneously, an article on Wirtland's Gold Coin Project was published by "PC World" (Bulgarian edition), which was also re-posted by several other mass media. A large 1.5 page general review on Wirtland was also published in a regional Bulgarian newspaper "Zname", featuring an interview with Alexander Popov, citizen of Wirtland from the city of Pazardzhik, Bulgaria.

At times of world economic crisis Wirtland wants to offer useful economic instruments to citizens, addressing the problem of personal savings' safety. It is central in most countries today, when the future of national currencies - even those which used to be the most stable yesterday - is unclear and shaky. There are just a few options how to preserve savings, and even fewer in case your sum is not very large. One of logical solutions is purchasing gold. It's not surprising that, according to Reuters, "Mints around the world say demand for gold coins has risen sharply as interest in the precious metal soars on the back of financial instability and concerns over the inflation outlook... The chairman of the French Mint, Christophe Beaux, said sales roughly doubled last year in value terms and are expected to rise by another 50 percent this year. The 2009 catalog the mint had produced was almost entirely pre-sold, he said."

Wirtland found an interesting solution within the limited choice of options it possesses being an unrecognized cybercountry. Wirtland plans to mint its own gold coin. The quality and weight of gold will be guaranteed, so the new coin will meet the demands of people, who will be able to use it as an investment tool. Formally, Wirtland's coin will have status similar to collectible or commemorative coins and medals. Wirtland has an agreement with a private producer of such objects, who is ready to mint the coins according to Wirtland's design and requirements, and sell them online. Wirtland opened contests for the best design and name of the coin, and a poll to define optimal weight/price of the coin. Once the price is established, Wirtland will start accepting advance orders for the new coin.

"Mystery" FOX News video recovered with apologies

The situation with "vanished" FOX News video is now resolved. The Fox News program has become finally available for everybody to watch (link). Let's watch the video with interesting comments by Larry Fiorino, balanced by emotional reaction of Fox' Patrice Harris.

Wirtland has received a letter from Tim Kassouf, Manager at G.1440. He says that Fox News video on Wirtland has now been re-posted, and apologized for inconvenience caused by its deletion. This deletion happened just minutes after the video was featured in Wirtland's news. A strange coincidence... In result, people who wanted to watch the video saw nothing but an error message.

The Fox News video that vanished: War against Wirtland?

From time to time every sovereign country has to face hostilities. Wirtland is no exception. What kind of warfare can be used against an IT country? Information warfare, naturally. I wish I was wrong in my interpretation of the facts, but here is the story:

On January 20, in Baltimore (Maryland, USA) a program about Wirtland was broadcasted by Fox 45 Morning News. It was an interview with Larry Fiorino, who also wrote an article in Baltimore's newspaper "Wanna get away? Try a virtual trip to Wirtland". Both in the interview and the article the author gave an objective and positive view on the concept of the first country in cyberspace.

We did not know about the television program on Fox News until recently, when we found the video on YouTube during a routine media monitoring. Naturally, we wanted to share this television program with all citizens of Wirtland, so today the link to videofile has been posted to Witizens Network, and to our Facebook and LinkedIn groups. Good news, isn't it?

So far so good. Strange things happened immediately after that. The video became unavailable. Attempts to watch it from our site, or directly from YouTube, result in error message "This video has been removed by the user". Now, that's a pity! It was an excellent interview. What happened to it, and why was it removed immediately after being featured in our news? A little investigation reveals that the video was posted by user G1440Marketing 6 days ago, along with several other Larry Fiorino's programs on various IT issues, all of them from Fox 45 News. All those videos have vanished as well, and it seems that account was closed several minutes after we published information in Wirtland's media.

The reason of this is unknown, but the speed of this action is very impressive indeed... Especially, given the fact it was very early morning in the USA. It appeared as if someone wanted to effectively stop the first English-language television program on Wirtland from spreading. Obama against Wirtland? But why?

Wirtland will contact Fox News and ask for the original video recording of the mysteriously vanished show.

Miss Wirtland 2010 opens on Valentine Day

Valentine Day is not an official holiday in Wirtland. However, it's a good day to start the new "Miss Wirtland 2010" photo contest. The organizers are happy that the first winners of Miss Wirtland 2009 became real celebrities not only in Wirtland, but internationally. The contest's wide international coverage ranges from lifestyle magazines to PC World, and from live show on Bulgarian TV to CNN, and probably we will see even more media attention. The coverage is very important for Wirtland, and it has already attracted numerous new citizens to Wirtland. This achievement is to a large extent thanks to our contestants. The organizers are sure that the new competition will bring even better results, and will become Wirtland's tradition. Turkish journalists invented a new name for Wirtland

After Bulgarian girl's victory in Miss Wirtland Contest received wide coverage in Bulgarian newspapers and TV, several articles on Wirtland appeared in leading Turkish mass media, such as "Sabah", "Hurriyet", "Aktif Haber", "Milliyet", "Sok", and even CNN Turk. Turkish journalists coined a new word to better represent Wirtland in eastern languages: "Hayalistan". Coverage in Turkey already resulted in increase in new citizens signing up in Wirtland - not only from Turkey but also from such countries as Egypt and Afghanistan. Welcome to Wirtland or Selam, Hayalistan!

Today, January 31, Wirtland is pleased to announce the winners of first Miss Wirtland Beauty Photo Contest. The jury has calculated the individual score of each photo, taking into account the rating (stars), number of visits, and each photo's period of exposure on the site (to equalize photos which were submitted on various dates). Thanks to our jury's objectiveness and diligence, and use of sophisticated IT technologies, we now have the absolute winner. And the winner is... ANELIA!!! Congratulations to Anelia!

Wirtland is reaching out to Turkish and Bulgarian audience

Today Wirtland took two additional steps to better reach out to Turkish and Bulgarian audiences:

The Turkish version of Citizenship Application Form is now available.

It is now possible to follow Wirtland in your own language. The first "localized" Twitter feed (click here) is in Bulgarian language, as Bulgarian-speaking people are a considerable part of Wirtland's population. Wirtland extends greetings to President Barack H. Obama

January 20, 2009 - Wirtland sent yesterday an official letter congratulating the new US President Barack Obama, on behalf of the people of the first internet-based country.

“Honorable Mr. President,
You symbolize the hope for positive changes of the American people, and also of a major part of mankind. Please accept warmest congratulations and best wishes of success from the citizens of Wirtland, the world's first internet-based sovereign country,“ the Address read.

In the letter, signed by chancellor of Wirtland, it is also emphasized that among many features that make President Obama’s presidency unique, there is also an unprecedented use of modern internet technologies in his electoral campaign. Chancellor of Wirtland expressed his belief in US President’s understanding of the concept and perspectives of the internet-based country, which transcends national borders without breaching or lessening the sovereignty of any countries.

True to the principles of consensus of the first web-based country, the official congratulation letter was written based on contributions from Witiziens.

Updates of Wirtland's websites

A whole range of brand-new features have appeared on the websites of Wirtland after the New Year holidays.

A new section "Projects" has been added to Wirtland website. It will display logos with links to main independent projects being developed in Wirtland, including those which are in beta testing stage - such as Virtual Duty-Free and Wirtland Medical Centre.

Witizens of Wirtland Network has got its own built-in automatic translation tool. The tool from Applied Language Solutions offers instant translation to 10 languages: German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean. The current version of translation software changes the layout of translated pages, making it more simplified. The work is underway to ensure seamless integration of this translation utility into the Witizens website.

Facebook users can now become 'fans' of Wirtland by visiting this new page. Also, Facebook users may now follow the news of "The Times of Wirtland" (link), and updates of Witizens' Network (link). These are additions to the existing "Witizens on Facebook" Group.

Bulgaria To Recognize Wirtland

Bulgaria may become the world's first nation to officially recognize Wirtland. On December 22th Bulgarian daily newspaper "Telegraph" quoted Mr. Dragovest Goranov, Spokesman of Foreign Ministry of Bulgaria, who discussed the possibility of recognition of Wirtland with correspondent.

"More than 180 people have joined Wirtland already, about half of them being our compatriots", - Bulgarian newspaper points out. Official recognition of internet-based worlds is becoming less unusual now, after Sweden was followed by other nations in recognizing Second Life in 2007. The interest of Bulgarians to Wirtland started after a television show at Bulgarian Nova Television. "Telegraph" dedicated a full page's article to Wirtland on December 6th. The Bulgarian daily also showed interest in supporting the Miss Wirtland Photo Contest, which started recently. This comes naturally as majority of the beauty contest's participants are from Bulgaria.

Bulgarian language is becoming increasingly popular in Wirtland. Some of the citizens' forums are now bi-lingual, as, for instance the recently-started "Cooking Book". Participants share the recipes of favourite dishes, and are working to create Wirtland's national food. Other popular ethnic group in the first web-based country is Argentinean, which also organized several meeting points. Importantly, the ethnic groups are not isolated. They actively interact between each other, overriding the language barriers with ease. A new intercultural dialogue project is underway thanks to witizens from the USA. Wirtland Citizenship Application forms are already available in English, Spanish, Bulgarian, and Portuguese. Chinese and Russian forms will be released soon.

Wirtland warmly greets the interest from Bulgarian people and government, and hopes for building mutually beneficial relations with Sofia.

First Big Newspaper Article On Wirtland Is Published

The first big newspaper article about Wirtland has recently been published. The article by Milko Levitcharov appeared in Bulgarian daily "Telegraph" on December 6, 2008. We have recently received the scan of the article from one of Witizens. Bulgaria became the first country to cover Wirtland both in printed media and on national television. This coverage led to large-scale influx of new citizens from Bulgaria. Bulgarian became the third language, in which the Witizenship Application Form is available (after English and Spanish).

Your Free Wirtland Residence Permit: How To Apply

Wirtland does not use commercial advertising campaigns to actively recruit new citizens, but its citizenship is free and open to everyone over 18 years of age. When you sign up at Witizens of Wirtland Network, you are offered two options: sign up as a "tourist", or apply for citizenship. Those who wish to apply soon receive one-page application form, which should be filled in and returned electronically.

That's about it. You receive your personalized Residence Permit. It is an electronic document. It bears the name of the owner and is suitable printing and framing. Alternatively, the document's central yellow-coloured part, also known as the yellow card, may be cut out. It fits any standard passport's page.

The Residence Permit gives you all the rights of a Witizen, including:

the right to vote and be elected for public positions;
the right to register a corporation or a representative office of a corporation, a non-profit organization, an association, a political party, or other legal entity in Wirtland;
possibility to receive a passport and an identification card;
possibility to register a marriage and receive a marriage certificate;
the right of nomination for national awards of Wirtland;
possibility to contribute to this newspaper.

Issuance of a residence permit and processing of the application are completely free of charge. If you wish to receive a printed passport or a plastic identification card, they can be issued after 3-5 months from the date of issuance of your residence permit. Owner of a Wirtland passport or ID card can use them as a legitimate identification document in most cases.

Wirtland's First Press Release Hits Google News

Recently the Press Section was added to the Wirtland's website. Why is UN recognition not required?
Recognition by United Nations Organization or by other states is important for every sovereign country, but it is not a necessary prerequisite for its existence. The Article 3 of Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States (which is considered as major part of customary international law), states:
“The political existence of the state is independent of recognition by the other states.” [1]

Why Wirtland considers itself sovereign?
According to the above-mentioned Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States, to have sovereignty, a state must have a permanent population, a defined territory, a government, and it must have the capacity to enter into diplomatic relations (Article 1).
Wirtland meets three out of four of these criteria. It has permanent citizens, who receive passports and may register any legal act with the Wirtland’s authority. Wirtland has government and may engage into relations with other entities. The only basic difference between Wirtland and a traditional state is absence of a defined territory. However, many of so-called self-proclaimed states, which meet all four of the Montevideo Convention’s conditions, still are not considered sovereign subjects of international law. This makes the Montevideo Convention’s requirements questionable, and strengthens the position of such states and their right of sovereignty.
The fast development of global communication and especially Internet leads to considerable changes in the present understanding of sovereignty. The today’s international lawyers specifically emphasize this tendency, doubting the Montevideo Convention’s set of criteria. In his paper “The Acquisition of Sovereignty by Quasi-States” professor Noel Cox points out: “Yet, this [Montevideo Convention’s] definition is increasingly meaningless. The notions of sovereignty and statehood are not easily defined or explained…. With the growth in both the (horizontal) extent and (vertical) reach of international agreements, treaties, conventions and codes, national independence is becoming less relevant. This tendency is becoming more noticeable in the modern commercial environment, and especially the internet”.[2]

Absence of its own land: an advantage?

As the traditional self-proclaimed state typically forms by way of separation from another state, the territorial question is always the main source of dispute. Wirtland’s sovereignty is not based on any kind of separatism. It does not claim any land, which belongs to other entity, therefore there is no intrinsic conflict in the Wirtland’s concept of sovereignty. Therefore, we see absence of own land rather as an advantage. It allows for unclouded relations between Wirtland and other nations of the world.

Are there any similar cases, precedents in international law?
Yes. Order of Malta is widely recognized as a sovereign entity, though it has no sovereign territory. Order of Malta has diplomatic relations with 101 states, and its claimed sovereignty is also expressed in the issuance of passports, license plates, stamps, and coins. [3]

Conclusion
The political existence of Wirtland is completely legal. Though political existence of Wirtland does not depend on recognition of other states, it welcomes all the efforts towards building peaceful relations with all the world’s states and international organizations. Wirtland encourages other states to treat the documents issued by Wirtland, including passports, as regular genuine documents.

"WL" Domain For Virtual Land

November 2, 2008 - Wirtland formally applied for its own country's internet top level domain (TLD) to the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, IANA. It is the first time that a virtual country applies for its own country domain. Wirtland applied for authorisation of ".wl" domain. Once granted, all sites in Wirtland will have domain names that will be ending with ".wl" (such as www.Wirtland.wl). Wirtland currently uses domain www.Wirtland.com. IANA allocates and maintains unique codes and numbering systems that are used in the technical standards (“protocols”) that drive the Internet.

Breaking News: The First Marriage Registered in Wirtland

On October 6, 2008, the first marriage was registered in Wirtland. The ceremony was conducted by means of a Skype video conference. The newly weds received a printed Marriage Certificate of Wirtland # 001, and a special wedding gift from the Government - free airline tickets. The newly weds' real location is Spain and Ukraine. The couple chose not to disclose their names for this press release. They had initially met online, and have already met twice in real life. They are both residents of Wirtland, and have recently applied for Wirtland's citizenship (a.k.a. witizenship). More information on this romantic story will follow soon.

Being A Foreign Tourist In Your Hometown?

A friend of mine often tells me about that special feeling she gets when traveling abroad. She enjoys being a foreigner. She enjoys her relaxed tourist’s outfits. She likes being different from the busy crowd, when she gazes around or asks directions. According to her, you don’t necessarily need to buy an airplane ticket to enjoy this. Just put on your shorts, get a backpack and a big photo camera – and treat yourself for a day-off. We did this a couple times, even pretending we are foreigners in our hometown. It’s a lot of fun. You have the right to ask questions to everybody, to behave silly, to ignore local rules, you may even refuse to understand the local language if you want. Well, what can you do? You’re a foreigner, after all!

The only problem is your ID. But not any more. With an identity card from Wirtland you become a legal foreign visitor in any country, including your own. It is not a fake document, since there is no incorrect information in it. It bears your real name, and certifies that you are resident of Wirtland. There is nothing wrong about it. Wirtland may be not (yet) recognized by some countries, but this is not your problem. The name “Wirtland” may be just as unfamiliar to a local authority as any other small and faraway country’s name. Wirtland’s ID card will make people scratch the backs of their heads, but it won’t get you in trouble.

So, what are you waiting for? Register for a free residence permit at Wirtland’s website, email your photo and claim for your ID card. And a second ID is always helpful in many situations.

New W-Sign To Symbolize Wirtland

One of Wirtland's younger fans suggested this hand gesture - W sign - to symbolize Wirtland informally. W sign may be used as a friendly or celebratory gesture, by one or two persons. If used by two persons, they unite hands with two V-signs into one W, same way as doing a "high five". With this easy salute you can always show your W-identity, or just greet your friends.

The First Postage Stamp

Though a postage stamp is not especially necessary in a virtual land, it is a traditional attribute of any country. And we could not resist this beautiful design of the first Wirtland's postage stamp proposed by Descartes, who says the cranes and other migrant birds are a universal symbol of freedom. Besides, it is a really unique gift for philatelists. The denomination of stamp is 10 ICU (International Currency Units, linked to gold price). The crane featured on the first stamp is red-crowned crane or Japanese crane (Grus japonesis).

Wirtland is a cybercountry and not a member of World Post Union, so our stamps are so-called Cinderella stamps. Such stamps cannot be used as postage and are only for collectors. Wirtland stamps are hand-painted by professional artist in watercolor. As they are hand-made, the price is rather high. The price of 10 ICU stamp is same as 10 ICU gold coin. The series of postage stamps will be continued.

Now you can also order the special edition Wirtland Postage Mug. This collector's mug features the classic Crane stamp image, and was released to commemorate the second anniversary of Wirtland on August 14, 2010.

Wirtland Introduces Flag

On August 20 Wirtland introduced its flag. The flag was drafted by Anonimo Veneziano, resident of Wirtland. The flag consists of yellow circle on the dark blue rectangle, over a white background. The blue rectangle symbolizes a computer screen - entrance to virtual world. The yellow circle symbolizes there is no sundown in Wirtland. Some critics say the blue rectangle resembles of “Black Square”, a picture by Kazimir Malevich. We don’t mind this interpretation at all.
